Call for Proposal
The Swiss Research Foundation for Electricity and Mobile Communication (FSM) supports innovative research on EMF-technologies and associated electromagnetic fields focusing on short-, medium- and long-term impacts on health, society, and environment. In 2023, FSM will award a total amount of CHF 100,000 for research projects related to questions of acceptance of infrastructures in the field of electricity and mobile communications, such as for example alpine photovoltaic plants, charging stations for electric vehicles or base stations for mobile communications..
Novel questions or methodological approaches are sought. In addition to empirical studies, conceptual work is also possible. Thematically, the call is broad and open. For illustrative purposes a few questions are mentioned: (i) Causes and ways to overcome the NIMBY blockade, (ii) Influence of the design of mobile communication antennas on acceptance, (iii) Framing by choice of words like radio wave versus radio radiation, (iv) Acceptance of infrastructures of the electricity and mobile communication sector in comparison with other technologies (similarities, differences and specific challenges) as well as other solution-oriented approaches.
The research work should have a reference to Switzerland so that, if possible, guidelines for action can also be derived.
The call is open to scholars from a wide range of disciplines, including sociology, psychology, communication/media and linguistics, ethics, history, and science and technology studies.
Interested researchers can submit a pre-proposal (please use the form “pre-proposal” to be downloaded from our website). The description has to be very concise (preferably not exceeding two A4 pages).
Deadline for the pre-proposal is 11.08.2023.
Project outlines must be submitted on the pre proposal form. The outlines should be short, ideally up to two A4 pages. They will be evaluated by the FSM scientific committee. The applicants of the selected outlines will then be asked to specify their applications in a full proposal. Public and private (domestic and foreign) research institutions and researchers can apply for participation. We also encourage junior researchers to submit research proposals. Applications for follow-up or co-financing of ongoing projects are possible.

Public and private (domestic and foreign) research institutions and researchers can apply for participation. In principle, only research at a high scientific level, which is in line with the goals of the FSM, will be supported. Pre-projects (seed money) can also be approved to promote a pioneering area.
