Call for Proposal

2022 Call for Proposal

The Swiss Research Foundation for Electricity and Mobile Communication (FSM) supports innovative research on EMF-technologies and associated electromagnetic fields focusing on short-, medium- and long-term impacts on health, society, and environment. In 2022, FSM will award a total amount of CHF 325,000 for one or two innovative research projects referring to questions about the opportunities and risks of future communication technologies.

What opportunities do future communication technologies such as 5G FR2, 6G, IoT or others offer to improve performance while at the same time reducing risks like environmental impacts (resource consumption, radiation exposure)? Of interest are especially studies (incl. numerical simulations) that explore the technological options (radio protocols, network topologies, etc.), evaluate scenarios for development, or address questions of how technological development can minimize environmental effects and accordingly how development toward lower environmental impact can be favored or steered through incentives or regulatory measures. Billions of sensors and devices will be connected in the next few years. How will the connectivity be implemented on the technical level (e.g. open vs. closed networks, short-range vs. long-range radio technologies) and what are the resulting consequences (e.g. regarding cost, resource consumption, allocation of frequencies, radiation exposure).

Interested researchers can submit a pre-proposal (please use the form “pre-proposal” to be downloaded from our website). The description has to be very concise (preferably not exceeding two A4 pages).

Deadline for the pre-proposal is 08.07.2022.

Project outlines

All public and private Swiss and international research institutions may apply for funding. Pre-proposals will be assessed by the Scientific Committee of the FSM according to the usual evaluation criteria for research projects. Successful applicants will be invited to submit a full proposal.

Conditions of participation

Public and private (domestic and foreign) research institutions and researchers can apply for participation. In principle, only research at a high scientific level, which is in line with the goals of the FSM, will be supported. Pre-projects (seed money) can also be approved to promote a pioneering area.
